A Tiny Kitten in Big Trouble
Recently, I was called out late in the evening to Hilly Fields Park in Brockley, South East London, where two abandoned ten-week-old kittens had been stuck high in a tree since the afternoon. One had been rescued earlier by a quick-thinking local, but the other had climbed even higher, making it impossible for the fire brigade’s ladders to reach. By the time I arrived, it was dark, and the kitten was terrified, camouflaged against the bark, and still calling out to its sibling below.
Other tree surgeons and the fire brigade were unable to rescue the kitten, so I arranged for a group of concerned locals to hold sheets below, just in case the kitten jumped or fell while trying to resist the rescue. I quickly climbed up using ropes and a spotlight to guide me, and after a tense few minutes, I was able to reach the kitten and safely bring it back down in my arms. The kitten was quickly reunited with its sibling and taken into the care of a fosterer, where both were given food, warmth, and comfort.
Had it not been for my daughter’s allergy, I would have happily taken the kittens home myself, but I’m relieved to know they are safe and will soon be looking for a loving new home together.
